Behind the scenes of ‘Release, Hold, Let go’ by Maika Garnica

To test the clay’s porosity and prevent leakage, Maika reversed the installation’s usual flow. Instead of circulating water through the sculptural system, the ceramic components were fully submerged in water while compressed air was introduced from within.

The clay revealed its subtle porosity — its “skin” allowing air to pass through. This permeability ultimately posed no risk: air is far less dense than water and can move through materials that appear solid to the naked eye.
