“I am sitting on the beach and I keep a yardstick in front of me, parallel with the horizon. They say that the Earth is round and I want to verify if this is true. But my yardstick appears to be too short or the earth not round enough.”
Starting from a childhood memory, Behind The Horizon wants to visualize Earth’s curvature. It is an attempt to look behind the horizon. Not with a yardstick, but with a huge tube with a length of 10.832 km. This tube was carried by 310 volunteers at the Belgian Coast on the 14th of May 2010. The middle of this tube is resting on the ground. Five km to the left and 5 km to the right of this center point, the tube is already 229 cm away from the earth’s surface. A straight tube hanging above a convex Earth. A clearly visible and comprehensible image of the bending of the Earth.
The result of this experiment is a photograph of 20 meters long and 3 cm high: a collage of 1805 photographs (scale 1/505) which shows a tube with a length of 10,832 km carried by 310 people at the tide line of the Belgian coast.
In a society where reality is more and more being repressed by images, Behind The Horizon tries to discover the tangible origin behind an image. It talks about the fascination with the relation between an image and its display and from a yearning desire for the reality that lies behind the picture.
“Ik zit op het strand en ik houd een meetlat uitgestrekt voor me, evenwijdig met de horizon. Ze zeggen dat de aarde bol is en ik wil dit zichtbaar maken. Maar mijn lat blijkt te kort of de aarde niet bol genoeg.”
“Behind the Horizon’ komt voort uit een jeugdherinnering.
Op 14 mei 2010 ondernam de kunstenaar een nieuwe poging om de kromming van de aarde te visualiseren. Deze keer met een iets langere meetlat. Een buis van 10.8 km werd door 310 mensen gedragen op het strand van Oostende. Het midden van deze buis rust op de grond. Vijf kilometer links en rechts van dit midden, is deze buis 229 cm boven het aardoppervlak verwijderd. Een rechte buis op een bolle aarde. Een duidelijk zichtbaar beeld van de kromming.
Het resultaat is en foto van 20 meter lang: een collage van 1805 foto’s van de buis van 10,8 km gedragen door 310 mensen aan de Belgische kust.
In een cultuur waarin de werkelijkheid steeds meer verdrongen wordt door beelden, gaat “Behind The Horizon” op zoek naar de tastbare oorsprong achter een (denk)beeld. Vanuit een fascinatie voor de relatie tussen beeld en afbeelding, en vanuit de liefde voor wat zich echt achter het beeld bevindt.
