The focal point of the installation ‘On the shoulder of giants’ is the reconstruction of art through 3D printing. Katinka de Jonge began by setting up a 3D-database of statues and monuments in public spaces in Antwerp, all managed by the Middelheimmuseum. By examining, scanning and organizing these images, Katinka ‘steals’ existing forms in order to create her own images.
“On the shoulder of giants” reflects on the value of an art object in public spaces and raises questions about the associated subjective and emotional value judgments. Why do we always prefer the original over the copy?
Uitgangspunt voor de installatie is de reconstructie van kunst via 3D-printing. Hiervoor zette Katinka de Jonge een 3D-databank op van Antwerpse standbeelden en monumenten, die worden beheerd door het Middelheimmuseum. De beelden werden geanalyseerd, gescand en georganiseerd en hun vormen werden haast ‘gestolen’ om er nieuwe creaties uit te kunnen ontwikkelen.
“On the shoulder of giants” reflecteert over de waarde van een kunstwerk in de openbare ruimte en werpt vragen op over waarom onze waardeoordelen subjectief en emotioneel geladen zijn. Waarom verkiezen we uiteindelijk toch steeds de originele versie boven een kopie?
