With Tree / Boom, Spincemaille goes out into the world in search of trees that can tell a story. Part of the tree is trimmed during a public moment and a photo is taken. In a mobile lab, the photo is then processed into a picture – and this using only materials from the tree: paper, pigment and wood. Tree / Boom is conscious of the value of trees. In most cases only parts of the tree will be removed. Very rarely will an entire tree be felled. Tree / Boom is a social and democratic process. To get permission to use (parts of) a tree, Spincemaille will have to gain temporary access to a person, neighbourhood or organisation. Owners will have to be convinced of the value of removing (parts of) the tree. These interactions will not only give access to the raw materials (leaves, fruit, soil and wood), but, through storytelling, will also open up the past and present world of the people and place where the tree is located. A mobile lab will be developed in collaboration with the Catholic University of Leuven (KUL). Although it is not the intention to shock, each public felling or trimming of a tree will stir the emotions, despite the fact that, far out of our sight, thousands of trees are felled and animals killed annually for our combined consumption. As if our emotions are only triggered by what occurs in our immediate environment. People are estranged from the original context of the products they consume. In addition, consumed goods are dead things, separated from the living context that feeds them, and the ethical and ecological consequences of this separation play themselves out far from sight. Tree / Boom brings the raw materials and product/producer back into a close relationship with each other. Not only does Tree / Boom actively engage in dialogue with a society marked by great challenges, such as climate change, the depletion of natural resources and globalisation, but also discusses the role of art and artist in this challenged society. It is an attempt to break free from the common frameworks in both art and economics, inspiring itself to alternative ecological production methods. Tree / Boom connects an ecological problem with an artistic problem and creates an alternative artistic model where context, product, raw material and artist/artwork are held in relation to one other in a radically short chain.

Met Tree / Boom gaat Spincemaille de wereld in op zoek naar bomen die een verhaal kunnen vertellen. Een deel van de boom wordt tijdens een publiek moment gesnoeid en er wordt een foto van gemaakt. In een mobiel labo wordt de foto vervolgens verwerkt tot een beeld – en dit met enkel materialen van de boom: papier, pigment en hout. Tree / Boom is zich bewust van de waarde van bomen. In de meeste gevallen worden slechts delen van de boom verwijderd. Zeer zelden wordt een hele boom geveld. Tree / Boom is een sociaal en democratisch proces. Om toestemming te krijgen voor het gebruik van (delen van) een boom, zal Spincemaille tijdelijk toegang moeten krijgen tot een persoon, buurt of organisatie. Eigenaars zullen overtuigd moeten worden van de waarde van het verwijderen van (delen van) de boom. Deze interacties zullen niet alleen toegang geven tot de grondstoffen (bladeren, vruchten, aarde en hout), maar zullen door middel van storytelling ook de vroegere en huidige wereld ontsluiten van de mensen en de plaats waar de boom zich bevindt. In samenwerking met de Katholieke Universiteit Leuven (KUL) zal een mobiel labo worden ontwikkeld. Hoewel het niet de bedoeling is om te shockeren, zal elke publieke kap of snoeibeurt van een boom de gemoederen beroeren, ondanks het feit dat, ver buiten ons gezichtsveld, jaarlijks duizenden bomen worden gekapt en dieren gedood voor onze gezamenlijke consumptie. Alsof onze emoties alleen worden opgewekt door wat zich in onze directe omgeving afspeelt. Mensen zijn vervreemd van de oorspronkelijke context van de producten die zij consumeren. Bovendien zijn de geconsumeerde goederen dode dingen, gescheiden van de levende context die hen voedt, en de ethische en ecologische gevolgen van die scheiding spelen zich ver uit het zicht af. Tree / Boom brengt de grondstof en het product/de producent terug in een hechte relatie tot elkaar. Tree / Boom gaat niet alleen actief in dialoog met een maatschappij die gekenmerkt wordt door grote uitdagingen, zoals klimaatverandering, uitputting van natuurlijke hulpbronnen en globalisering, maar gaat ook in op de rol van kunst en kunstenaar in deze uitgedaagde maatschappij. Het is een poging om los te breken uit de gangbare kaders in zowel de kunst als de economie en inspireert tot alternatieve ecologische productiemethoden. Tree / Boom verbindt een ecologisch probleem en een artistiek probleem en creëert een alternatief artistiek model waarin context, product, grondstof en kunstenaar/kunstwerk in een radicaal korte keten in relatie tot elkaar worden gehouden.
