When I Stopped Reading Fiction And Started Watching History is an installation in the shape of a surveillance control panel. A 9-screen matrix is presented to the spectator, providing images that seem to originate from different periods of world history. History is being put under camera surveillance.
When I Stopped… is a desperate multi-screen search to history’s plot, in the margin of the contemporary leisure industry. The installation images are shot at different large-scale re-enactments of historic battles. The participants try to bring history back to life as realistically as possible.
Re-enacting and reliving the past transforms history to something you can experience yourself, to something that is alive and authentic. They are both an answer to the mediatized world, in which we tend to experience more and more through a (computer)screen, as a reaction to the fictionalization of the past in Hollywood films.
But to which extent is it possible to create an authentic image of the past? The re-enactments eventually tell us more about our time than about history.
“When I stopped reading fiction and started watching history” is een installatie in de vorm van een bewakingsbedieningspaneel. De toeschouwer krijgt beelden te zien via een 9-schermige matrix die afkomstig lijken te zijn uit verschillende perioden van de wereldgeschiedenis. Geschiedenis wordt onder cameratoezicht geplaatst….
When I stopped … is een wanhopige multi-screen zoekopdracht naar de plot van de geschiedenis, in de marge van de hedendaagse “vrijetijdsindustrie”. De beelden in de installatie zijn gemaakt op verschillende grootschalige reconstructies van historische veldslagen. De deelnemers probeerden er om de geschiedenis zo realistisch mogelijk weer tot leven te brengen.
Het naspelen en herbeleven van het verleden transformeert het verleden tot iets wat je zelf ervaart, iets dat leeft en authentiek is. Het biedt een antwoord op de gemediatiseerde wereld, waarin we de neiging hebben om meer en meer via een (computer-) scherm te ervaren, als een reactie op de fictionalisering van het verleden in Hollywood films.
Maar in hoeverre het mogelijk is om een authentiek beeld van het verleden te maken? De reconstructies vertellen ons uiteindelijk meer over onze tijd dan over de geschiedenis……
