“The Stack” is an evocative digital art project that delves into the intricate layers of understanding and creation in the realm of digital arts. It’s a meta-commentary on the artist’s personal journey through the labyrinthine world of artistic creation, exploring the elusive balance between the quest for pure expression and the complex realities of technological mastery. Borrowing its name from both engineering lexicon and cultural theory, “The Stack” acts as a metaphor for the incremental layers of knowledge and techniques that artists must navigate to bring their vision to life.
The artwork consists of tablets in equilibrium, chained to one another, each representing a layer in this maze of knowledge. From the basics of atoms and electrical circuits to the complicated algorithms behind computer programs, each tablets symbolizes a piece of knowledge and a stage in the artist’s journey towards understanding. Yet, every layer reveals another, even more complex, begging the question: What does mastery really mean in a digital age?
The tablets that make up “The Stack” are crafted from clay, echoing one of humanity’s earliest forms of information storage. This choice of material serves as a reflection on the historical evolution of knowledge-sharing and record-keeping, from ancient clay tablets inscribed with cuneiform to today’s digital displays.
The title itself is a nod to the term “full stack” in computer engineering, denoting an individual proficient in all aspects of a project and contrast to it with our collective interdependency—how we stand on the shoulders of intellectual giants, benefitting from generational wisdom while adding our layer to “The Stack”.
“The Stack” is een suggestief kunstproject dat zich verdiept in de complexe lagen van inzicht en conceptie van digitale kunst. Het is een meta-commentaar op de persoonlijke reis van de kunstenaar door de labyrintische wereld van artistieke creatie, waarbij de ongrijpbare balans tussen de zoektocht naar pure expressie en de complexe realiteit van technologisch meesterschap wordt opgezocht. The Stack” ontleent zijn naam zowel aan ingenieurslexicon als culturele theorie en fungeert als metafoor voor de opeenvolgende lagen kennis en technieken die kunstenaars moeten doorlopen om hun visie tot leven te brengen.
Het kunstwerk bestaat uit tabletten, aan elkaar geketend, die elk een laag in dit doolhof van kennis voorstellen. Van de basisbeginselen van atomen en elektrische circuits tot de ingewikkelde algoritmes achter computerprogramma’s, elk tablet symboliseert een stukje kennis en een fase in de reis van de kunstenaar naar inzicht. Maar elke laag onthult een andere, nog complexere laag en roept de vraag op: Wat betekent meesterschap eigenlijk in een digitaal tijdperk?
De tabletten waaruit “The Stack” is opgebouwd zijn gemaakt van klei, als een echo van een van de vroegste vormen van informatieopslag door de mensheid. Deze materiaalkeuze is een reflectie op de historische evolutie van het delen van kennis en het bijhouden van gegevens, van de oude kleitabletten met spijkerschrift tot de digitale displays van vandaag.
De titel zelf is een knipoog naar de term “full stack” in computertechniek, waarmee een individu wordt aangeduid dat bedreven is in alle aspecten van een project en contrasteert met onze collectieve onderlinge afhankelijkheid – hoe we op de schouders van intellectuele reuzen staan en profiteren van de wijsheid van generaties terwijl we onze laag toevoegen aan “The Stack”.
