Online sunlight ordering system!
Sint Maartensdal, one of the biggest residential complexes in Leuven, had the ambition in the 60′s to create a social commune, made up of equally sized apartments.
Nevertheless there is a fundamental inequality: bloc 1 is oriented north-south, so only half of them enjoy’s direct sunlight.‘There is the Sun’ wants to provide an answer to this problem, and is a symbolic renovation of the utopian idea’s of architect Renaat Braem.
To achieve this, three movable mirrors were placed in front of ‘blok 1’.
They reflect the sunlight the whole day long towards one fixed point. Through a simple web application the residents can enter their house number and order sunlight for a specific moment. Check out the online agenda: www.thereisthesun.be.
Next to this installation, Spincemaille invited Gijs Van Vaerenbergh (architect) and Wide Vercnocke (illustrator) to create an artwork based on the idea of a symbolic restoration. “There is the sun” became a multi-disciplinary project, with three in situ artworks. The complete complex is the presentation space, the occupants and passers-by the public.
