With Sleep Spindle, Line Boogaerts makes the invisible workings of our sleep tangible, through drawings and projections that show how external stimuli influence our dreams, thoughts, and memories.
A sleep spindle is a brief rhythmic burst of brain activity occurring during Stage 2 sleep. These spindles play a crucial role in maintaining deep sleep by suppressing external stimuli. They filter environmental noise so the sleeper remains in a calm, undisturbed state, promoting both the depth and continuity of sleep.
The Sleep Spindle installation consists of multiple videos and layers of drawings on glass combined with projected images. These works reference the impact of noise on sleep and how, during sleep, our thoughts shift between the day’s memories and external influences.
Noise is visualised through marks on the glass and in the projection, forming a subtle image of how our sleep is shaped by impressions from the outside world.
